Magic Tuber Stringband
An old-time string band from Durham, North Carolina, with Courtney Werner on fiddle, Evan Morgan on guitar and Mike DeVito, switching instruments to suit each tune. Thrill Jockey signed them in 2023 and released Needlefall, their fourth full-length, in 2024. They set Appalachian fiddle tunes against sustained drones and field recordings drawn from Werner's background in ecology, and brought in local players including saxophonist Crowmeat Bob.
Why The Avalon Lounge: A 100-capacity Catskill room with a Korean kitchen and a booking that swings from noise to jazz to dance parties.
