Marvin "Bugalu" Smith
A drummer who moved to the Hudson Valley in the 1990s and ran one of New York's longest Tuesday night jazz jams at the Terrace Lounge in Newburgh until 2012, teaching a student group he called Bugalu's Drum Crew. He joined the Sun Ra Arkestra in 1987 after five years with Archie Shepp, studied with Max Roach, Philly Joe Jones and Roy Haynes, and runs Bumar Records.
Why The Falcon: A riverside room in Marlboro running donation-based shows nearly nightly, with real jam-scene pedigree.
