Odesa Urban Folk: Kommuna Lux (Ukraine)
A seven-piece from Odesa, Ukraine, started in 2014 by clarinetist Volodymyr Gitin, playing klezmer and the gangster street songs of their city. Bagrat Tsurkan sings, with Oleg Vasianovich on accordion, Andrei Okhramovich on trumpet, Yaroslav Besh on trombone, Viktor Kirilov on guitar and Sergei Poltorak on percussion. They won Germany's Eiserner Eversteiner folk prize in 2018 and call the music Odesa gangsta folk, softened to urban folk on North American tours.
Why The Local: A tiny all-ages listening room whose booking punches far above its size, from Ukrainian folk to jazz trailblazers.
