Home Base

Woodstock

Home base — the Woodstock village green.

A historic walking village and the heart of the area's music and arts scene. Dylan lived right in town (in what's now the Espresso Cafe), and it's full of galleries, shops, hikes, and summer outdoor music.

About 20 minutes south of the Woodstock green.

New York's first capital: a small city with a colonial Uptown Stockade District, a historic Rondout waterfront, and a fast-rising food scene.

Rosendale

About 25 minutes south of the Woodstock green.

A funky little former cement town with a beloved cafe scene, the rail trail and trestle, and a real do-it-yourself spirit.

A Short Drive

An up-and-coming riverside town across from Hudson, with a growing arts and music scene — home to The Avalon Lounge.

Rhinebeck

About 35 minutes southeast of the Woodstock green (across the river).

The upscale, walkable one — the Hamptons of the Hudson Valley — just across the bridge from Kingston.

Red Hook

About 35 minutes southeast of the Woodstock green.

A relaxed village near Bard College and Tivoli, in the heart of Dutchess County farm and wine country.

Further Drives

Hunter

About 40 minutes northwest of the Woodstock green.

A Catskills ski town built around Hunter Mountain, with year-round outdoor activity and one of the state's great waterfalls nearby.

Hudson

About 45 minutes north of the Woodstock green.

High-end and arty — we call it Brooklyn North. Warren Street is wall-to-wall antiques, cafes and restaurants, with the Basilica event space down by the river.

New Paltz

About 40 minutes south of the Woodstock green.

A lively college town at the foot of the Shawangunk ridge — gateway to Mohonk and world-class hiking and rock climbing.

Beacon

About an hour south — a day trip on the way to or from the city.

An artsy riverfront city about halfway up from NYC, anchored by the Dia Beacon museum in a former Nabisco box factory, with a long, walkable Main Street.
