The menorah on the Village Green

Woodstock lights a large public menorah on the Village Green, run by Chabad Lubavitch of Ulster County. The pattern reported in past years is that the first and last nights get a ceremony and the six nights between are simply lit, with no official event. The ceremonies have included latkes, apple cider, music, tiki torches lit to honor the Maccabees, and a gelt drop in which the fire department drops foil-wrapped chocolate coins to the crowd. Turnout has been put at 75 to 100 people in decent weather, and the organizers have described it as open to anyone, not only to Jewish families.

Why the dates move so much

Hanukkah follows the Hebrew calendar, so it slides against the Gregorian one by weeks rather than days. It starts December 4 in 2026, December 24 in 2027, and as early as November 27 in 2032.
